Meet Our Incoming School Director: Mr. Malcolm Nicolson

Mr. Malcolm Nicolson brings over 33 years of experience in international education leadership across IB World Schools and within the global development of the International Baccalaureate itself. A citizen of the United Kingdom, he holds graduate and postgraduate qualifications in Ecological Sciences, International Education, Energy and Environmental Management, and Teacher Education from leading institutions including the University of Edinburgh, Newcastle University, University of Bath, and Teesside University.

Mr. Nicolson began his teaching career in the UK and has since worked in prominent international schools across the Bahamas, Thailand, and India. He has held senior leadership roles at leading IB World Schools, including The New International School of Thailand (NIST) and most recently Sreenidhi International School, Hyderabad. Known for a warm, balanced, and highly approachable leadership style, Mr. Nicolson places strong emphasis on academic excellence, student wellbeing, parent partnership, and nurturing values-driven school communities.

Beyond school leadership, Mr. Nicolson has held senior roles with the International Baccalaureate (IB) in The Hague, where he served as Head of Diploma Programme (DP) Development and Head of Middle Years Programme (MYP) Development. In these global leadership positions, he led curriculum development and strategic innovation across IB World Schools worldwide, influencing programme design, teaching practices, and assessment frameworks implemented across thousands of schools internationally. He authored and reworked core IB guidance documents and was the architect and business lead of “MYP: The Next Chapter”, the first comprehensive review of an IB programme. This landmark initiative played a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of concept-based, skills-driven learning, including the design and implementation of the innovative MYP e-Assessment model.

His educational philosophy is succinctly captured in his belief:
“Happy students learn, and happy teachers teach best.”

His approach to education has been shaped by decades of experience within the global IB community and by life beyond the classroom. While recognising the importance of academic achievement, he firmly believes that lasting success is best realised when students and educators are supported, engaged, and fulfilled. He views education as fundamentally relational, built on trust, connection, and collaboration, enabling students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Outside his professional life, Mr. Nicolson leads an active lifestyle and is a lifelong enthusiast of sport, music, and travel. A devoted supporter of Middlesbrough FC, he values wellbeing, balance, and continuous personal growth, principles that closely align with the ethos of Pathways World School.
